Sony Reader PRS-500: Good News/Bad News
The good news is that the long awaited Sony Reader PRS-500 formerly known as the Sony Librie will soon be available in the market. This is a rather revolutionary eBook reader because it uses the battery efficient monochrome (black and white) E-ink LCD technology. E-ink technology saves on battery power by making static images (or in this case, letters) on the screen and once the image (or letters) is displayed, it does not require additional power to make it stay there. The only time that it will require battery power is when a new image (or page) needs to be shown on-screen. As expected, this device will be using Sony's proprietary Memory Stick technology to store eBook files.
And now for the bad news: Fujitsu has just enveiled their color E-ink screens. These screens have all the capabilities of the E-ink display of the Sony PRS-500 but in color. Now, will this development the marketability of the yet-to-be-released Sony Reader? If a no-name OEM Taiwanese manufacturer uses the Fujitsu Display on a similar device, will it eat up customers from Sony? Well, we'll just have to wait and see...
