Attack of the Digital Zombies

Walking the streets of the Central Business District in Makati, one would realize the fact that there is a glut of "MP3 Players" (though the proper term should be "Portable Digital Media Player") in the market today. Almost every other person you see walking past you will be wearing an earphone of some kind and oblivious to their surroundings. Some are walking like zombies, others have a pronounced rhythm in their gait. Some are discreetly hiding the cords of their earbuds by cording them under their shirts while others (especially those who have WHITE earbuds) would flaunt them.

Which brings me to my rant. Having white earbuds seems to have become the new "in" thing for obvious reasons (if you don't know what this obvious reasons now, click this). However, some clueless "quasi-fashionistas" have taken this to a new low. They strut around with white headphones broadcasting to the world that they are using a high-end portable digital media player which, in my humble opinion, is in bad form since it simply attracts the gaze of potential snatchers and holduppers. I do own *that* brand of player but I had stopped using that ubiquitious white headphones for various reasons (one of them is to discourage any potential harm to my person that may be brought about by an attempt to snatch my iPod away from me).

I'm not saying that its bad to use that white earbuds but the sheer number of people using them has started to irritate me. What irritates me more is that most of them are simply white earbuds connected to a cheap AAA-powered, made in China players that would not even have the capacity to hold my whole Lord of the Rings audio book.

Oooh! Pardon me, my barista may have served me with a rather weak coffee today -- thus exposing some barbs in my writing...
