AMEX: I Left Home Without It, and I'm glad!

The New York Times reports that 230,000 American Express customer information has been compromised when a company laptop of their spun-off investment advisory unit, Ameriprise, was stolen from a parked car. According to NY Times:

"The information on the laptop included the names and Social Security numbers of about 70,000 current and former financial advisers and the names and internal account numbers of about 158,000 customers, about 6 percent of its 2.8 million clients."

This is a serious breach in security and expect a lot of lawsuits in the coming days regarding this unfortunate incident. A simple encryption program could have helped safeguard the data in the notebook and for a few hundred dollars more, they could have bought a more secure notebook that requires Smartcard authentication and/or Biometrics.

Its all water under the bridge now but this should serve as a warning to fellow road warriors: Keep your data safe!
