Irresponsible (Tech) Journalism?
A few days ago, an online newspaper posted their "predictions" for 2006 and among those predictions is a tongue-in-cheek entry saying that Google is in talks with a giant U.S. retailer about distributing a low-cost "Google PC". A lot of bloggers picked this up with banners saying "Google will sell low priced PC!" (or something to that effect).
Social bookmarking sites such as digg.com and slashdot has picked this up and the tongue-in-cheek prediction had start to become a statement of fact. Today, a lot of real news sites are picking up the "real" news of Google denying the existence of the low cost Google PC although some are still insisting on it and has even named an obscure hardware manufacturer that will do the PCs for Google.
I'm not sure whether be be sad about the fact that there will never be a low-cost Google PC or about how some people had created such a buzz about some "prediction" and turning it into "news".
